Why homeowners prefer hardwood flooring

Generations of sophisticated homeowners have chosen hardwood flooring to complement luxurious furnishings and ornate walls and ceilings. McCune Mansion in Salt Lake City, Utah, is a grand circa 1900 home that showcases hardwood flooring in opulent rooms, like the reception room. This traditional floor covering brings an upscale touch to any room decor, from traditional to trendy. Factory Flooring Direct can help you find the flooring that suits your needs. Hardwood is just one kind of flooring that you'll find in our Lake Point, Utah, showroom, and our free mobile showroom.

Solid wood flooring

Unfinished and prefinished solid hardwood flooring strips and planks are milled from one solid piece of wood. Standard strips are ¾-inch thick by 2-¼-inch wide while planks are 3 to 6 or more inches wide. Each type of floor covering has a different look after installation is complete. Unfinished wood, which is finished on-site, has a flush look while prefinished wood, which is finished in the factory, has a beveled look. Since factories use very durable finishes that are not available to on-site installers, warranties on factory finishes are longer. It takes one day to install prefinished solid wood. Unfinished boards are nailed to the subfloor, and then the new floor is sanded, stained, and sealed. Installers spend one week in the home, and then acclimation takes an additional week.

Engineered hardwood

Like solid wood, engineered wood is available in many species, stains, and styles. Boards are composed of separate plywood layers that are bonded together to form an inner core. A thin layer of hardwood is bonded to the top of this core. Because of its engineered construction, the core is less likely than a solid wood core to contract, expand, or shift when exposed to fluctuations in temperature as well as moisture and humidity. Therefore, this floor covering can be installed in basements with a moisture barrier and over a concrete slab or radiant heating system. Generally, it’s not a good idea to install it in bathrooms. While not as long-lasting as solid wood, high-quality, engineered hardwood flooring has a long lifespan of 25 to 30 years.

Factory Flooring Direct provides free in-home measurement. Our experienced team of installers can install any type of wood flooring.
